What is Autodesk Inventor Tolerance Analysis?
Autodesk Inventor Tolerance Analysis is software for tolerance stack-up analysis that runs inside Autodesk Inventor. Mechanical engineers use it to check how the tolerances on individual parts add up across an assembly, so parts fit together and can be swapped, without specifying tighter (and more expensive) tolerances than the design needs.
Instead of building stack-ups in spreadsheets, engineers pick the stack-up path in the Inventor assembly. The software captures the dimensions, tolerances, and relationships from the 3D model and calculates the results.
Inventor Tolerance Analysis is included in the Autodesk Product Design & Manufacturing Collection. It isn't sold on its own.
Why Use Inventor Tolerance Analysis?
Save on Excessive Machining Costs
Save time and money by avoiding high-precision tolerances that add unnecessary costs and effort to your machining workflow.
Confirm That Your Components Will Fit Together
Verify the fit of the components in your assemblies using tools that are fully integrated in Inventor.
Collaborate Better with Automated Reports
Communicate analysis results and cost-control efforts to manufacturing and quality engineers.
Worst-Case, RSS, and Statistical Tolerance Analysis
Inventor Tolerance Analysis supports three analysis methods, so you can match the result to how strict your fit requirements are:
| Method | What it tells you | When engineers use it |
| Worst-case | The extreme result if every part is made the edge of its tolerance at the same time | Critical fits where any failure is unacceptable |
| RSS (root sum of squares) | A statistical estimate of variation that assumes part dimensions vary independently and rarely all hit their limits at once | Higher-volume production where looser, lower-cost tolerances are acceptable |
| Statistical | A probability-based result, reported with Cpk, Sigma, DPMO, and % Yield | Predicting how many assemblies will fit in production |
Running more than one method shows where you can loosen tolerances to save cost without hurting fit.
